 Job Purpose:

This position requires technical expertise and tactical execution to define and execute a portfolio of complex projects, looking at new perspectives to solve existing and new brand solutions within confectionery.  As a Senior Engineer - Global Packaging Development & Innovation, this role may work on all categories and brands, based on the needs of the business.   

This is an advanced level position that supports the Innovation Agenda and Pipeline, which are derived from the business strategy through consumer obsessed designs. They deliver value and growth by driving product quality, assuring consumer safety, imbedding value to the consumer and promoting efficiency based on robust science.

The Senior Engineer – Global Packaging Development possess a high drive for results, excellent project management skills, a creative and entrepreneurial growth mindset, and an ability to create strong networks and relationships to drive the Packaging Sustainability & Innovation agenda.  They have solid working knowledge in early research and work independently with minimal guidance and will build effective cross-functional working teams to drive projects to execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and influence an Innovation Pipeline as part of the team, including development of new packaging formats to drive growth.
  • To be fully knowledgeable on consumer profiles, brand frameworks, major competitors, markets, process, packaging, quality and remains abreast of new developments in food technologies, packaging, design, category trends and related fields.
  • Maintain active involvement in appropriate trade organizations, external affiliate network with industry experts and coalitions, to further expand industry knowledge.
  • Provide on-going packaging innovation input to internal Consumers Insight team.
  • Closely partner with client’s Consumer Insight team to qualify concepts with end-users.
  • Partner with Design Team to support their design efforts with technical packaging knowledge; being able to translate packaging concepts to feasible designs/functionality. Conceptualize, design and execute prototypes for attention-grabbing packaging formats and materials, using design elements such as shape, color, graphics and typography to create packaging that deliver on the needs of our consumers and customers.
  • Meet with the design and marketing teams to discuss packaging Desirability, Viability and Feasibility.
  • Ensure packaging designs accurately represent the company’s brand and ethos.
  • Collaborate with graphic designers and copywriters to finalize packaging text and graphics.
  • Identifying suitable packaging materials and conducting feasibility studies.
  • Plan relevant laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of the packaging.
  • Advise internal peers on the development and use of technologies towards further technical readiness.
  • Assess and evaluate new, relevant markets and concepts with appropriate adjacency to existing packaging technology for new applications or to new technology such as specialty paper, bio-polymer materials and barrier coating technology from the Deep Science technical platform.
  • Partner with the Global Pack R&D Engineers to co-lead the concept to design and early development new products/packages supporting marketing objectives.

Education & Professional Qualification

  • S. Packaging Science, Industrial Design/Engineering, or Graphic Design
  • 7+ years as a Packaging Engineer, or Industrial Designer/Engineer of Packaging
  • 3+ years supporting CPG Packaging Innovation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Sound knowledge in packaging
  • Able to set priorities and demonstrate project management skills.
  • Experience in data collection & analysis using scientifically proven methods.
