The Opportunity
 
Adept Group is seeking a Senior Packaging Engineer (1099 Contractor)! This candidate will have 8+ years of packaging engineering experience. They will have strong SolidWorks capabilities (drawings, assemblies, ASME standards). They would also have hands-on experience with rigid packaging formats, BOMS, & coordinating test labs for ship/stability testing.
 
The project is remote but will require occasional travel to CA and NC.
 
This is a 1099 Contractor (Independent Contractor) opportunity for 6 months at 40 hours per week with the possibility of extension. 
 
Packaging Updates & Change Management 
  • Execute day-to-day packaging and labeling updates for existing products. 
  • Scope, manage, and implement packaging changes through established change-control process. 
  • Update and maintain packaging specifications, documentation, and Bills of Materials (BOMs). 
  • Ensure packaging and labeling changes meet internal standards, regulatory requirements, and market timelines. 
Technical Packaging Development 
  • Create and revise SolidWorks drawings, dielines, and assemblies in accordance with ASME standards. 
  • Support structural packaging changes such as pack count adjustments, bundle updates, and carton/tray modifications. 
  • Coordinate shipping qualification testing (ISTA/ASTM) through external laboratories when required. 
Materials & Packaging Research Support 
  • Participate in blister stability studies and barrier material evaluations when assigned. 
  • Support pouch packaging assessments and other material alternatives based on project needs and experience. 
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on technical packaging studies. 
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Execution 
  • Work closely with Operations, Quality, Commercial, and external manufacturing partners. 
  • Support packaging initiatives with clarity, documentation accuracy, and timely follow-through. 
  • Manage urgent or unplanned packaging needs in a fast-paced, consumer-driven environment. 
  • Adhere to SOPs, packaging processes, and documentation standards.  
Typical Day-to-Day
  • Reviewing new packaging or labeling change requests 
  • Scoping what needs to be updated (specs, drawings, artwork, documents) 
  • Making SolidWorks updates (dielines, assemblies, models) 
  • Updating specifications and documentation through change control 
  • Maintaining and correcting BOMs 
  • Coordinating with external test labs as needed 
  • Supporting blister or barrier material work when assigned 
  • Assisting with pouch packaging trials 
  • Working with Operations, Quality, Commercial, and external partners 
  • Handling urgent packaging requests or priority shifts 
  • Providing packaging/material information when requested 
  • Joining short engineering check-ins and following SOPs 
Must-Haves
  • 8–15 years or more of packaging engineering experience 
  • Strong SolidWorks capability (drawings, assemblies, ASME standards) 
  • Ability to write and maintain packaging specifications 
  • Experience building and maintaining BOMs 
  • Hands-on experience with rigid packaging formats (especially blister trays and lidding) 
  • Comfort handling structural packaging changes 
  • Experience coordinating test labs for ship/stability testing 
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment 
  • Strong documentation and change-control discipline 
  • Effective cross-functional communication 
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for lab access (or local to Mountain View/Durham) 
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience with barrier materials (COC/EVA, ACLAR alternatives, PVC/PVDC, MetPET) 
  • Background in packaging stability testing 
  • Familiarity with lab equipment (barcode graders, Mocon devices) 
  • Experience with pouch packaging development 
  • Experience in regulated industries (tobacco, pharma, med device) 
  • Ability to support advanced Category 3 work 
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems (Propel, Veeva, etc.) 
  • Familiarity with packaging BOM structures. 
  • Working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
